Jack Smith defends Trump investigations during Senate hearing

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, defending his investigations into Donald Trump regarding the 2020 election and classified documents. Smith maintained that his decisions were made without regard to political association and stated that his investigations yielded “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” that Trump engaged in serious crimes against the nation.

Republican senators, led by Chairman Chuck Grassley, criticized Smith’s methods, alleging his team improperly obtained communications from members of Congress and journalists. Records released by the committee indicate that investigators obtained text messages involving 44 members of Congress and communications from 87 phones used by White House officials during Trump’s first term.

During the hearing, Senator Eric Schmitt attempted to accuse Smith of perjury by suggesting he had been in Atlanta to meet with prosecutor Fani Willis. However, the accusation faltered when it was revealed that Smith had actually attended a women’s college basketball game in Maryland involving the Iowa Hawkeyes and the University of Maryland Terrapins, rather than an Atlanta Hawks game.

In response to the scrutiny, Senator Bill Hagerty filed a professional misconduct complaint against Smith with the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility, alleging that Smith is a “blatantly partisan actor” whose conduct damaged the constitutional order.
