Jack Smith investigation collected financial data from thousands of Trump donors

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Donald Trump included the collection of financial data from thousands of small-dollar donors, according to documents released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley. The records, provided by whistleblowers, indicate that Smith’s team acquired at least 4,782 checks from individuals across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

The checks, which date from September 2019 to August 2023, reportedly contained sensitive information including home addresses, bank account numbers, routing numbers, and signatures. Some donations were as small as $1. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Grassley questioned Smith regarding the necessity of obtaining this donor data, noting it did not appear in the special counsel’s public reports.

Smith testified that the investigation was focused on matters within his mandate, specifically whether individuals or entities attempted to block the peaceful transfer of power. The documents were released as part of an inquiry into FBI investigations, including “Arctic Frost,” which focused on a 2020 fake elector scheme.
