Jack Whaley wins U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion
Jack Whaley, a 22-year-old English amateur and Florida State University student, won the U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club. He defeated Jay Leng Jr. of Stanford by 4 and 3 in a 36-hole final.
Whaley’s victory marks the first time an Englishman has won the title since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013. Despite facing heavy rain, the need for double gloves, and a wasp sting during the tournament, Whaley maintained composure to secure the Havemeyer Trophy.
The win earns Whaley exemptions into the 2027 U.S. Open and the 2027 Masters, provided he maintains his amateur status. He also earned a spot in the 2027 Open Championship at St. Andrews and the Walker Cup for Great Britain.
Whaley’s journey included a resilient run through the match play bracket, overcoming a difficult start in the stroke play portion where he narrowly made the cut. He credited much of his success to the unwavering support of his father, Andy Whaley, who served as his caddie during the championship.
