UK approves Jackdaw North Sea gas field development

The UK government has approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, a decision aimed at strengthening domestic energy security amid global instability. Located approximately 150 to 250 kilometers east of Aberdeen, the field is being developed by Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor.

The project is expected to increase UK gas production by approximately 6% at its peak and could provide enough gas to meet the heating needs of roughly 1.4 million homes. Officials stated that production could begin as early as the end of October 2026. The development is projected to contribute an estimated £2.9 billion to the UK economy and support hundreds of jobs.

The approval follows previous legal challenges in 2025 that overturned the project's initial consent due to concerns regarding environmental impact assessments. While the government maintains that the project is a pragmatic step toward energy security during the transition to renewables, the decision has faced sharp criticism from environmental groups and some political figures, who describe it as “climate vandalism” that undermines net-zero commitments.
