Jackdaw gas field set for UK government approval
The UK government is reportedly preparing to approve the development of the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, located off the coast of Aberdeen. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to grant approval before the end of September, while Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is expected to issue a formal recommendation as early as next week.
Operated by the Adura joint venture between Shell and Equinor, the Jackdaw field is projected to meet approximately 6.5% of the UK’s peak gas demand. Operators suggest gas could begin flowing as early as this winter, noting that infrastructure is already 99% complete. The move comes amid rising energy costs and a push for increased domestic energy security.
The decision remains controversial. Previous approvals for Jackdaw and the Rosebank oil field were rescinded by a court ruling that required companies to account for the carbon emissions produced by their resources. Environmental campaigners argue the projects contradict climate commitments and could cause significant economic damage due to carbon pollution. Meanwhile, analysts from Wood Mackenzie suggest the long-term value of North Sea extraction may be limited, as an estimated 90% of the UK’s commercially viable reserves have already been extracted.
