Jackie Bachteler returns to Burnley after life-threatening sepsis battle
Burnley women’s manager Jackie Bachteler is set to return to Turf Moor this Sunday following a life-threatening battle with sepsis. The 37-year-old manager revealed that shortly after joining the club in December 2025, she suffered a severe infection that resulted in her being placed in intensive care.
Bachteler described the onset of the illness as initially feeling like jet lag or a common cold, but her condition rapidly deteriorated at the training ground. She experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure and oxygen levels, leading to a collapse. During her hospitalization, she required oxygen, intravenous antibiotics, and intensive monitoring to manage organ dysfunction.
The recovery process has been extensive, with Bachteler having to relearn how to walk and continuing to manage post-sepsis symptoms such as fatigue, tremors, dizziness, and memory issues. She is currently undergoing respiratory therapy. Her return to the dugout coincides with World Sepsis Day, an occasion she intends to use to raise awareness about the dangers of the condition.
