Jackie Fox advocates for European digital violence laws
Jackie Fox, an activist from Dublin, is advocating before the European Parliament to expand protections against digital violence across Europe. Her campaign is inspired by the death of her daughter, Nicole, who died by suicide in 2018 following years of physical abuse and intense online bullying.
Fox successfully campaigned for ‘Coco’s Law’ to be integrated into Irish criminal law in 2021. She now seeks to bring similar legislative frameworks to the broader European Union to combat the millions of cyberbullying cases reported globally.
A study commissioned by the German Women's Council involving 1,380 women highlights the severity of the issue. The survey found that two-thirds of respondents have altered their online behavior—such as sharing fewer photos or withdrawing from digital spaces entirely—due to fears of digital and AI-supported sexualized violence. The Council describes this trend as a democratic problem, as it results in individuals being displaced from public digital discourse.
