Jackie Stewart highlights impact of safety standards on F1 racing

Three-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart has observed that modern safety standards have fundamentally changed how drivers compete. In an interview with his grandson, Lucas Stewart, the 87-year-old legend noted that current drivers can afford to be more aggressive because mistakes no longer carry the same fatal risks seen in previous eras.

Reflecting on his career during the 1960s and 1970s, Stewart recalled the extreme dangers of the sport, noting that many of his contemporaries lost their lives on the track. He emphasized that his efforts to advocate for improved safety were driven by the frequent and often unnecessary loss of friends. He stated that while drivers still make errors, those mistakes do not cost lives as they did in the past, marking a significant evolution in the sport.
