Jackson Police Investigate Unidentified Black Woman Found Hanging

Jackson police discovered the body of an unidentified Black woman hanging from a tree behind a vacant home at the 500 block of Road of Remembrance on the evening of Monday, Aug. 3, 2026. Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard confirmed the finding and said the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The Jackson Police Department has not released the victim’s name and has not indicated whether foul play is suspected, urging anyone with information to contact the department or Crime Stoppers.

The case revives community concerns about recent tree‑hanging deaths of Black individuals in Mississippi, notably the 2025 death of Delta State University student Trey Reed, which sparked allegations of racially motivated foul play. Authorities are monitoring the investigation amid heightened public sensitivity.

Police and the coroner’s office continue to gather evidence, and the investigation remains ongoing.
