Jackson, Mississippi stalls data center projects pending new regulations

Residents gathered at Jackson City Hall to voice strong opposition to proposed data center construction, citing worries about strain on water supplies, power bills, air and noise pollution, and overall infrastructure impact. Speakers called for a ban or at least a temporary moratorium while a regulatory framework is developed.

City Council President Brian Grizzell announced that the city will pause any data‑center construction until comprehensive regulations are adopted. The decision follows a public hearing on June 22, where about 80 locals attended despite a fire‑marshal‑imposed occupancy limit. Concerned citizens highlighted a proposed rezoning of 230 acres by out‑of‑state Saxum Investment Company and urged the council to protect public health and the environment. The only pro‑development voice was the company’s lawyer, who did not oppose regulation. No construction will proceed until the city finalizes its rules.
