Jacob Callaghan pleads manslaughter for father's death at Gateshead birthday party
Jacob James Callaghan, 19, admitted to manslaughter after stabbing his 37‑year‑old father, Matthew Callaghan, during the teen’s 18th‑birthday celebration on 9 January at the family home on Mahogany Crescent in Gateshead, England. He told friends he acted to protect his girlfriend, Jinaya Taylor, after the father allegedly punched her and attempted to stomp on the teen’s head.
Prosecutors accepted the manslaughter plea, noting the possibility the teenager believed his actions were necessary for self‑defence. Jacob remains in custody awaiting sentencing; Taylor has been charged as an accessory after the fact. Police arrested Jacob at Shortland, and paramedics found Matthew with multiple stab wounds to the heart, later pronounced dead.
