Jacob Freytes' Death Prompts Bronx Vigil and Calls for Tougher Gun Penalties

Jacob Freytes, a 12‑year‑old boy of Dominican origin, was killed by a stray bullet while riding his bicycle in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon. The shot was fired during a street altercation involving six men; two other men were injured. Jacob, the son of retired NYPD sergeant Jesús Freytes and Migdalia Martínez, was taken to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A community vigil was held at the intersection of Elliot Place and Walton Avenue, the site of the shooting. Family, neighbors, local leaders and NYPD officers lit candles, placed balloons and bicycles, and mourned the loss. Police commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the arrest of 45‑year‑old William Ferrer, charged with murder, assault and illegal weapon possession. Bronx County Executive Vanessa Gibson and mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the killing and urged mandatory three‑to‑five‑year sentences for illegal gun possession. NYPD data show at least 50 minors have been shot in New York this year.
