Jacob Martin acquitted in 22-year-old criminal case
Former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin has been acquitted of all charges by the Patiala House Court in a criminal case that lasted 22 years. The case originated from a 2004 First Information Report (FIR) involving allegations of forgery, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Passport Act.
The charges were linked to a cricket tour to the United Kingdom in 2004. According to Martin, a member of the touring party overstayed their visa and obtained a fake immigration stamp to return to India. While Martin was not named in the original FIR, he stated his name was added during the investigation due to his profile as an international cricketer.
The court found no credible evidence regarding financial transactions or Martin’s alleged ownership and control of the Ajwa Sports Club. Additionally, several witnesses failed to substantiate the prosecution's claims. Martin, who played 10 One Day Internationals for India, noted that the prolonged legal battle caused significant personal hardship, including the loss of his job with the railways.
