Jacobo Bucaram and Estrada family face US extradition and asset seizure

Jacobo Bucaram, Jaime Estrada Bonilla, and Jaime Estrada Medranda face potential extradition to the United States following their recent arrests in Ecuador. Ecuadorian Interior Minister John Reimberg stated that the process could take several weeks as authorities await formal extradition requests from US officials. Bucaram was apprehended in Guayaquil by police after an intelligence operation revealed he had changed his physical appearance and used multiple vehicles to evade detection.

In the United States, the Southern District of New York Prosecutor’s Office has filed a request for the seizure of assets belonging to the Estrada and Bucaram families, as well as Geovanny Fernández Menéndez and William Briones López. The legal filing seeks all direct or indirect profits from alleged drug trafficking, as well as any assets used to facilitate the crimes, including firearms and ammunition.

The US prosecution alleges the group conspired to import cocaine into the United States and possessed machine guns. Investigators claim the network used a seafood export company to conceal drugs in tuna containers. The indictment also alleges the group coordinated shipments of cocaine to Mexico and maintained ties with criminal organizations such as Los Choneros and Los Lobos.
