Jacques Danka Longa elected president of the Conference of Bishops of Togo

During the 143rd ordinary session of the Conference of Bishops of Togo (CET), held in Kara from October 11 to 16, 2026, Bishop Jacques Danka Longa of Kara was elected president of the institution. He succeeds Bishop Benoît Alowonou. Archbishop Isaac-Jogues Gaglo of Lomé was elected as vice-president to support the new leadership.

The session served as a platform for discussing the Church's pastoral mission, socio-political situation in Togo, and various institutional matters. Key topics included theological training in major seminaries for the 2026-2027 academic year, financial reviews of seminaries in Lomé, Tchitchao, and Notsè, and the management of the Catholic University of West Africa (UCAO).

Additionally, the bishops reviewed the outcomes of the first National Youth Days held in Atakpamé, which drew approximately 3,500 participants. The new leadership is tasked with strengthening ecclesiastical communion and advancing the Church's mission within Togolese society.
