Germany winter preparedness: Heating, weather, and housing advice

As the heating season begins in Germany, various reports highlight essential advice for tenants and homeowners regarding energy costs, indoor climate, and maintenance.

Regarding rental rights, tenants may be entitled to a 15 percent reduction in heating costs if landlords fail to distribute costs based on actual consumption as required by the Heating Costs Ordinance. Additionally, if rooms remain below 20 degrees Celsius during the day or 18 degrees at night, tenants may have grounds for rent reductions.

To prevent mold and maintain a healthy indoor climate, experts recommend maintaining humidity between 40 and 60 percent. Proper ventilation through short, intense bursts (Stoßlüften) is advised over leaving windows tilted (auf Kipp), which can lead to heat loss and moisture buildup. To avoid mold, it is recommended to keep doors between differently heated rooms closed and to ensure furniture is kept at least 10 centimeters away from exterior walls.

Weather forecasts suggest potential volatility in winter patterns. While long-term models predict a mild December, a disruption in the polar vortex could lead to significant snowfall and extreme cold in January. Such heavy snow loads pose risks to building structures, particularly large flat roofs.
