UK property services face rising cyberattacks amid low insurance uptake

Cyberattacks targeting UK property services businesses increased by 17% in 2025, rising from 178 incidents in 2024 to 208. Despite this growing threat, cyber insurance penetration in the real estate and renting sector remains significantly lower than the broader SME market across all business sizes.

According to GlobalData, only 7.7% of sole traders in the real estate and renting sector hold cyber insurance, compared to 13.1% in the wider SME market. Among micro businesses, penetration is 15.8% versus 26.4% for all SMEs, and 20.5% for small property businesses compared to 40.1% for the wider market.

Property firms are high-value targets because they manage sensitive data, including bank details, mortgage information, and identity documents. The financial impact of cybercrime in this sector is notable; City of London Police and Action Fraud reported 143 cases of conveyancing fraud between April 2024 and March 2025, totaling £11.7 million in losses.
