Jade Thirlwall reveals diagnosis of rare no-burp syndrome
Singer Jade Thirlwall has revealed she suffers from Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (R-CPD), a rare condition also known as ‘no-burp syndrome’ that prevents the ability to burp. Thirlwall noted that the condition causes significant bloating, which has led to unfair public comments regarding her weight and body during performances.
Symptoms of R-CPD include abdominal pressure, bloating, and chest discomfort. While Botox injections into the cricopharyngeus muscle are a known treatment, Thirlwall expressed hesitation regarding the procedure due to concerns about its potential impact on her vocal cords.
Content creator Gemma Renwick, who also lives with the condition, has launched a petition seeking greater recognition and improved access to treatment for R-CPD within the National Health Service (NHS). The petition, which has gathered nearly 5,000 signatures, calls on the government to review the adequacy of care for sufferers. An NHS England spokesperson previously noted that clinical evidence for the condition remains limited due to low awareness levels.
