Jadrolinija former employee sentenced for embezzling 55,000 euros
A former employee of the Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija has been sentenced to a one-year suspended prison sentence by the Rijeka Municipal Court for embezzlement. The 50-year-old woman, identified as I. M., admitted to stealing ticket revenue during a three-week period between August 22 and September 11, 2022, while working at a ticket counter in Prizna.
The defendant misappropriated approximately 55,221 euros (416,066 kuna) by failing to deposit passenger payments into the company's account or the treasury. The court ordered her to compensate Jadrolinija for the total damages, amounting to 57,243 euros.
In determining the sentence, the court cited her lack of prior criminal record, her confession, and her status as a caregiver for three minor children as mitigating factors. However, the fact that the company has not yet been reimbursed after four years was considered an aggravating circumstance. The verdict is final and enforceable, with a 15-day deadline for debt repayment.
