Jaese Neungwon executive sentenced for falsifying battery material origin
An executive at Jaese Neungwon, a South Korean subsidiary of the Chinese company Huayou Cobalt, has been sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension for falsifying the origin of battery cathode materials.
Between December 2023 and May 2024, the executive and several employees disguised Chinese-made cathode materials as South Korean products to meet delivery deadlines for Tesla. The group allegedly used methods such as mixing materials or swapping large industrial bags and labels to hide the true origin. The scheme resulted in approximately 3.3 billion won in illicit profits.
The court noted that while the crime damaged national credibility and international trade order, the sentence took into account that the incident was a one-time occurrence caused by initial equipment defects at the factory.
