Jaffna long-distance bus station faces operational delays

The long-distance bus station in Jaffna, located approximately 600 meters from the city center, continues to face operational challenges despite being completed five years ago. The facility was intended to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the city, particularly near Vaithiyasalai Street and the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Following a directive from the Jaffna High Court, attempts were made last Tuesday to launch bus services from the station for the fourth time. However, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) reportedly declined to commence services, hindering the effort to modernize passenger transport and reduce congestion.

The ongoing traffic issues in the city center have reportedly impacted emergency services, making it difficult for ambulances to reach the Teaching Hospital quickly. Additionally, patients staying at the hospital have faced disturbances from the noise and heavy vehicle traffic caused by the current lack of a functional long-distance terminal.
