Jaffna temple festival leaves 157 with eye injuries

At least 157 people, including 55 children, have received medical treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital after suffering eye injuries following a Hindu temple festival in the Piranpatru area of Jaffna. Patients reported symptoms such as severe eye pain, irritation, and difficulty opening their eyes.

Medical professionals suggest the injuries may be photokeratitis, a condition caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Police have seized several high-powered, Chinese-made lamps used at the Murugan temple for technical examination to determine if their intensity caused the harm.

Authorities are investigating the electrical specifications and intended use of the equipment. The Jaffna District Secretary and the Sandilipay Divisional Secretary have advised anyone who attended the festival on Thursday to seek an eye examination at the hospital.
