Jagex announces RuneScape 4, a new Unreal Engine MMORPG

At RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham, Jagex officially announced the development of a new standalone MMORPG, currently referred to by the working title ‘RuneScape 4’ (RS4). This marks the first major title in the franchise to be built using Unreal Engine, a significant technical shift from the studio’s proprietary RuneTek engine.

The project originated as a planned expansion for the survival game RuneScape: Dragonwilds, titled ‘Shadows of Ashenfall’. However, developer feedback and the desire for persistent servers and larger player groups led the team to evolve the concept into a full-fledged, independent MMO. The new game will be set in the world of Gielinor during the Sixth Age, beginning in the Ashenfall region years after the events of Dragonwilds.

Jagex emphasized that RuneScape 4 is intended to exist alongside current titles, including RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds, rather than replacing them. Each will maintain dedicated development teams. Additionally, Jagex announced a new RuneScape animated adaptation in partnership with streamer MoistCr1tikal and Lyrical Media. The new MMO is in early development and is expected to be several years away from release.

Other announcements included ‘RuneScape Reignited’, a remastered experience launching December 2, 2026, and updated roadmaps for Old School RuneScape.
