Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited project following player backlash
Jagex has cancelled its RuneScape Reignited project less than two weeks after its announcement. The project was intended to be a “fresh-start” initiative featuring new servers with a separate economy and specific progression models.
The decision follows significant criticism from the player community. Users expressed concerns regarding the potential fragmentation of the player base and the requirement to pay new monthly subscriptions for characters on the new servers. Creative Director Mod Ryan acknowledged the mistake, noting that the studio aimed to avoid repeating past errors, such as the 2012 combat update that led to the creation of Old School RuneScape.
Despite the cancellation, Jagex confirmed that the scheduled December 2 update remains on track. This includes the Adventure Guide and the first part of the remastered journey. To compensate, the studio will offer a 10-day free trial of member content from December 2 to December 12, available to new characters and accounts that have not held an active subscription since June 2. The studio's development roadmap for 2027 remains unchanged.
