Jaguar Aroeira observed with cub in the Pantanal

A jaguar named Aroeira was recently observed interacting with her cub, Nika, in the Miranda Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul. The interaction was captured by nature guide Fagner Roque de Almeida at the Caiman Ecological Refuge.

Monitoring efforts for Aroeira have been conducted by the Onçafari project since 2022. This work involves habituating the animals to the presence of observation vehicles, which allows researchers and guides to document natural behaviors without interfering with the animals' conduct. Such monitoring is considered vital for conservation and expanding scientific knowledge regarding the species, which plays a critical role in maintaining ecosystem balance as an apex predator.
