Jaguar Land Rover delays electric Defender debut until 2030
Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly decided to delay the full renewal of the Land Rover Defender, which will subsequently postpone the debut of its first fully electric version. While the new model was previously expected between 2028 and 2029, sources close to the company suggest the launch may now be pushed to 2030.
The delay is attributed to the fact that the current Defender architecture is not suitable for integrating large battery packs without significant compromises. Consequently, the electric version is tied to the debut of the next generation. However, development of a smaller, fully electric “baby Defender” variant is expected to proceed as planned.
Internally, the company has noted there is no immediate urgency to replace the current model, which continues to see strong demand, selling approximately 110,000 units annually. The company also faces logistical considerations regarding US tariffs, as North America represents 28% of its sales.
