Jaguar Land Rover shifts strategy with Discovery Sport exit and new Range Rover Sport edition
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is implementing significant changes to its vehicle lineup and production strategy. The company has announced that production of the Land Rover Discovery Sport will conclude in December 2026. After 11 years on the market, the model has seen a sharp decline in sales, falling to less than one-tenth of its 2016 peak. JLR cited declining profit margins and the financial impracticality of redesigning the aging platform to meet the European Union’s General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2) as primary reasons for the discontinuation.
The discontinuation marks a shift at the Halewood plant in the United Kingdom, which is being re-equipped to produce next-generation electric and hybrid vehicles based on the company’s new modular architecture. Following the Discovery Sport's exit, the Range Rover Evoque will become Land Rover’s most accessible model.
In contrast, JLR is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Range Rover Sport with the launch of the ‘TWENTY Edition’ in India. Priced at Rs. 1.90 crore, this special edition is based on the SV Autobiography variant and features a 4.4-litre Twin Turbo V8 mild hybrid engine producing 529bhp. The edition includes bespoke ‘TWENTY’ detailing, performance seats, and is available in a signature Sanguinello Orange finish.
