Jaguar seeks refuge in tree after being pursued by peccaries in Argentina

In the Esteros del Iberá region of Argentina, a female jaguar was recently filmed seeking refuge in a tree after being pursued by a group of peccaries. The incident, recorded at Estancia Rincón del Socorro near Mercedes, highlights an unusual reversal of roles where a group of prey animals used their numerical superiority to corner a top predator.

This interaction is viewed as a sign of the successful reintroduction efforts for the species in the area. According to the Rewilding Argentina Foundation, the wild jaguar population in Iberá reached approximately 50 individuals as of April 2026, following an initial release of three females. The presence of the jaguar is considered vital for maintaining the ecosystem's balance as an apex predator.
