Jaguar sightings rise in Corrientes, Argentina, sparking public outreach

After a jaguar was photographed without a collar in Mburucuyá and later in Saladas, the province of Corrientes confirmed a resurgence of the big cat in areas where it had not been seen for nearly 70 years. Rewilding Argentina estimates about 50 free‑ranging jaguars now inhabit the Iberá ecosystem, a result of a long‑term reintroduction program.

The increased presence has drawn curiosity from tourists and concern from local residents and farmers. Preventive actions included the temporary suspension of classes at a rural school in Mburucuyá and the installation of camera traps to monitor movements. To address safety and promote coexistence, the municipality organized an open public talk on 4 August at the Justo Aromí Cultural Center, featuring officials from the municipal government, Rewilding Argentina, the National Park, and the provincial authorities.

Speakers explained the recovery project, offered guidance on what to do when a jaguar is sighted, and emphasized the need for responsible tourism and community awareness as the felines expand their territory in search of food and mates.
