Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh face political disputes over recruitment and pay

In Meghalaya, the Congress party has accused the state government of unilaterally restructuring teaching positions through a new hiring model. According to party leader Manuel Badwar, an August 19 letter directs that new appointments in government and deficit schools through the 2027-28 financial year will fall under the Structured Pay Framework of the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SEMAM).

Badwar alleges this creates a two-tier system where new teachers perform identical work to regular staff but receive lower salaries, fewer allowances, and lack government-employee status. The Congress has demanded the immediate publication of relevant notifications and called for the hiring model to be suspended until it can be debated in the Assembly.

In Himachal Pradesh, BJP legislators have accused the state government of withholding crucial recruitment data from the Assembly. The dispute concerns information regarding recruitments conducted by the State Selection Commission. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu responded by stating the government is compiling comprehensive details to address past irregularities and intends to provide a full response in March 2027.
