Jaime García Serrano warns of risks from excessive AI dependency
Colombian mathematician Jaime García Serrano, known internationally as the "Human Calculator," has warned about the risks of excessive dependency on artificial intelligence. While acknowledging the technological benefits of AI, García Serrano argues that the primary concern is the potential replacement of fundamental human capacities such as reasoning and learning.
During interviews, he noted that students and young people are increasingly relying on digital tools for immediate answers, which may prevent them from developing essential skills. García Serrano reported finding students in schools and universities who struggle with elementary operations, such as multiplication tables.
He emphasized that technology should function as a supportive tool rather than a permanent substitute for thought. He noted that while AI can provide rapid results, it may lack the ability to explain the detailed mental procedures used to reach a solution, a distinction that highlights the continued value of human mathematical development.
