Jaime Lorente debuts as director with film El Mal Hijo

Spanish actor Jaime Lorente, known for his roles in ‘La casa de papel’ and ‘Élite’, has made his directorial debut with the feature film ‘El Mal Hijo’. Set in the rural region of Murcia, the naturalist drama explores themes of parental responsibility, family trauma, and the search for emotional security.

The film follows the protagonist, Rubén, from a turbulent childhood to young adulthood. The narrative depicts a life marked by neglect and addiction within the family, with the protagonist finding his only stability through a close relationship with his grandmother, played by Susi Sánchez.

To reflect the protagonist's life stages, Lorente utilized different cinematic textures, filming the first half of the movie on 16 mm and the second half on 35 mm. The director has stated that the work is driven by the idea that emotional wounds in adulthood are often rooted in early parental influence.
