Jaime Munguía ordered to defend WBA title against Bektemir Melikuziev

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has ordered super-middleweight champion Jaime Munguía to defend his title against mandatory challenger Bektemir Melikuziev. Both parties have been given a deadline of October 21 to reach a formal agreement for the bout.

Munguía, who won the championship on May 2, 2026, by defeating José Armando Reséndiz, has seen his 120-day mandatory defense period expire. Melikuziev, the division's No. 1 ranked fighter and official mandatory challenger, has previously advocated for the opportunity to compete for the title.

If the two camps fail to reach an agreement or refuse to negotiate by the October 21 deadline, the WBA Championship Committee may initiate a purse bid to determine the terms of the fight.
