Jaipur implements enhanced security for Garba festivals amid women's safety protests
Authorities in Rajasthan are intensifying security measures for the upcoming Navratri and Garba festivals to ensure the safety of women and young girls. Following feedback from organizers and security models used in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, Jaipur police are implementing a multi-layered approach. This includes the deployment of the Kalika Unit, the use of female officers in plain clothes to monitor crowds, increased lighting in dark spots, and enhanced CCTV surveillance.
Specific concerns addressed by organizers include safe travel home late at night, overcrowding, harassment, unauthorized filming, and the protection of minors. DIG and Community Policing Nodal Officer Pankaj Chaudhary has instructed district SPs to utilize community policing strategies to manage these risks.
In a separate but related demonstration of safety concerns, a large group of women and young girls conducted a night walk protest at Jawahar Circle in Jaipur. Carrying posters, the protesters demanded a safer environment and questioned the current law and order system, stating they would continue to take to the streets until systemic improvements are made to ensure women can move freely at night without fear.
