Jair Bolsonaro seeks reinstatement of former advisors investigated in vaccine fraud case
Lawyers for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have petitioned Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes to allow two former advisors, Sérgio Rocha Cordeiro and Max Guilherme Machado de Moura, to rejoin his support team. The two men were previously removed from their roles following investigations into the fraudulent insertion of Covid-19 vaccination data.
The defense argues that the legal status of the advisors has changed following a June request by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) to archive the investigation. The MPF stated there was insufficient evidence of authorship or intentional wrongdoing. Cordeiro and Moura had previously served four months in preventive detention in 2023 related to the case.
If the request is granted, the advisors would be authorized to perform routine activities at Bolsonaro's residence, where he is currently serving house arrest. The defense maintains that their return should proceed provided all existing precautionary measures and oversight are respected.
