Jairo Vera's festival performance in La Cruz sparks controversy

The hiring of urban singer Jairo Vera for the Fiesta de la Palta Crucina 2026 in La Cruz, Valparaíso, has sparked significant controversy. The artist is currently under judicial investigation as a co-author of a sexual assault involving a minor that occurred in November 2022. While the singer is subject to precautionary measures, including nighttime house arrest and travel restrictions, he maintains his innocence.

Representatives for Vera issued a statement asserting that the ongoing investigation should not be treated as a premature conviction. They argued that the artist has respected all court decisions and that his right to continue his professional career should coexist with the presumption of innocence.

In response to the municipal decision, the Fundación Fuerza Ciudadana has requested that the Contraloría oversee the legality of the performance. Raimundo Palamara Stewart, president of the foundation, has called for political responsibility regarding the use of public funds for a family-oriented event and has demanded full transparency concerning the event's budget, financing, and the criteria used to select the artist.
