Jakarta air quality ranks fourth worst globally with unhealthy AQI

Jakarta's air quality reached unhealthy levels on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, ranking as the fourth worst city globally with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 158, according to IQAir data. The city follows Kuala Lumpur, Kinshasa, and Ho Chi Minh City in global pollution rankings.

In response, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is implementing several strategic policies to reduce emissions. These include expanding the Transjabodetabek public transport network with new routes such as Blok M to Alam Sutera, Blok M to PIK 2, and Blok M to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The government is also accelerating the electrification of public transport, aiming to transition the entire Transjakarta fleet to over 10,000 electric buses by 2030.

Governor Pramono Anung has urged residents to switch to public transportation and reduce private vehicle use. To support this, the provincial government provides free public transport services for 15 specific groups of people. Additionally, authorities are optimizing waste management through Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facilities to mitigate emissions from the waste sector.
