Kalimantan forest fires trigger severe haze and flight cancellations

Severe forest and land fires in Kalimantan have triggered widespread haze, significantly impacting air quality, visibility, and daily activities across Indonesia and Malaysia.

In South Kalimantan, visibility has dropped to as low as 10 meters in some areas, posing health risks and disrupting transportation. The Indonesian Minister of Transportation reported that flight cancellations have occurred in West Kalimantan due to unsafe visibility levels. In Banjarbaru, the local Education Office has delayed school start times to 09:00 WITA to protect students from the smog.

Air quality monitoring shows extremely unhealthy levels in several regions. Sintang and Kubu Raya in West Kalimantan have recorded very unhealthy PM2.5 concentrations. The haze has also become a transboundary issue, with the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board reporting that smoke from West Kalimantan is moving north into Malaysia, causing unhealthy air quality in several Sarawak districts including Serian and Kuching.

Local authorities in Banjarmasin have noted that while small fires occur within the city, the primary source of the thickest haze is being transported from neighboring regions.
