Jakarta air quality reaches unhealthy levels

Air quality in Jakarta reached unhealthy levels on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Data from IQAir indicated that by midday, the air quality index reached 159, with PM2.5 concentrations at 64 micrograms per cubic meter. This level is approximately 12.8 times higher than the annual air quality guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier in the morning, at 07:00 WIB, the index was recorded at 132, with PM2.5 levels at 48 micrograms per cubic meter. In the context of Indonesia, Jakarta's air quality was ranked seventh worst, following cities such as Pontianak, Palembang, and Palangkaraya.

Health officials recommend that residents wear masks, avoid outdoor activities, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers to mitigate risks. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 particles—which include dust, smoke, and soot—is linked to premature death, particularly for individuals with chronic heart or lung diseases.

In response to ongoing pollution concerns, the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of DKI Jakarta has included a Draft Regional Regulation on Air Pollution Control in its 2027 legislative program. Abdul Aziz, Chairman of the Bapemperda, stated that the priority is to establish regulations that provide protection for the community.
