Jakarta and Seoul discuss urban and cultural cooperation

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno met with Seoul Deputy Mayor Jeong Sang-hun at the Seoul Metropolitan Government Building to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two cities. The meeting focused on several key sectors, including culture, creative economy, urban development, and education.

Jakarta and Seoul have maintained a sister city relationship for over four decades. Rano Karno noted that both cities share similarities as major Asian economic hubs with strong creative industries and shared ambitions to strengthen their positions as global cities. Jakarta aims to learn from Seoul’s experience in urban design and development that preserves cultural identity, specifically regarding public spaces and livability.

Conversely, Jeong Sang-hun indicated that Seoul can learn from Jakarta’s experience in managing a massive population and high density. With Jakarta’s metropolitan area housing over 42 million people, the city offers unique insights into managing the complexities of a megapolitan environment.
