Jakarta anti-corruption protests escalate into riots

Protests in Jakarta against corruption escalated into riots outside the House of Representatives (DPR) in Senayan, resulting in the detention of 322 individuals. Authorities have since named 49 people as suspects, including 44 adults and five minors.

According to Jakarta police, the unrest involved the setting of fires at a police post and motorcycles, as well as the use of rocks, sticks, and makeshift weapons. Police responded to the disturbances with water cannons and tear gas. One individual reportedly died in the hospital after collapsing at the scene.

The demonstrations were organized by the United Pati Community Alliance (AMPB) to demand the passage of an asset forfeiture bill, which would allow the state to seize assets linked to corruption and money laundering. The bill has been pending in parliament since 2008. Protesters also called for harsher penalties for officials convicted of graft.
