Jakarta communities implement independent waste management and fuel production
Community initiatives in Jakarta are driving independent waste management efforts in response to Governor's Instruction Number 5 of 2026 regarding waste sorting and processing at the source.
The Prakarsa Warga community is encouraging traditional markets to manage waste independently. By involving the public, the goal is to create integrated systems that process organic waste, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, into economically valuable products. This approach aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site while creating green jobs. To support this, Prakarsa Warga, Perumda Pasar Jaya, and Jakpro recently visited the Caringin Central Market in Bandung to study successful independent waste sorting practices.
In residential areas like Setiabudi, residents are converting plastic and styrofoam waste into alternative fuels comparable to gasoline and diesel. In the Karet Kuningan area, collected plastic waste is processed using machines to produce fuel, which is then used to power waste bank operational vehicles and bottle shredding machines. One kilogram of plastic waste can yield approximately 0.9 liters of fuel.
