Joko Widodo faces multiple legal proceedings over alleged diploma fraud
Former President Joko Widodo is involved in two separate legal matters concerning allegations that his academic diploma is falsified.
In a civil lawsuit, Roy Suryo’s lawyer Abdul Gafur Sangaji said Jokowi has repeatedly failed to appear, despite Indonesian Supreme Court rules that require a defendant to be present in person at mediation.
In a related criminal case, Doctor Tifauzia Tyassuma (known as Doctor Tifa) was previously a defendant. She has now declared she is a free person and no longer a defendant, while her lawyer Abdullah Al Katiri warned of numerous procedural irregularities, including improper seizure of documents. The case was transferred to the East Jakarta District Court, with a new hearing scheduled for 6 August 2026. Jokowi’s own counsel, Rivai Kusumanegara, confirmed that the former president will attend that hearing in person, appearing as an ordinary citizen.
