Jakarta exhibition promotes cage-free egg production transition

The organization Act For Farmed Animals (AFFA) has launched ‘Beyond the Cage’, an immersive exhibition at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta. Running from September 5–7, 2026, the event aims to educate the public on the lives of laying hens in battery cages and the development of cage-free systems as a sustainable alternative.

During the opening, the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that any transition toward cage-free production should be gradual, measurable, and based on scientific evidence. Officials noted that improving animal welfare is closely linked to food safety, zoonotic disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change mitigation.

Using the ‘One Health’ and ‘One Welfare’ approaches, experts highlighted that reducing animal stress through better environments can decrease the need for antibiotics, leading to healthier food products. However, the government acknowledged that shifting production systems requires significant adjustments in infrastructure, costs, technical knowledge, management, and market certainty.
