Jakarta faces logistics demand and rising migration to satellite cities

Jakarta is facing increasing pressure to develop urban logistics hubs to support its growing population, which is projected to reach 10.68 million by mid-2025. Experts suggest that North Jakarta is the most strategic location for these facilities due to its proximity to the Tanjung Priok Port and its ability to serve the Jabodetabek region. The transportation and warehousing sector in North Jakarta grew by 8.67 percent in 2025, outpacing the regional economic growth of 4.92 percent.

Simultaneously, significant migration patterns are shifting the demographic landscape. Data from the Population and Civil Registration Office indicates that Bogor is the primary destination for residents leaving Jakarta, with over 23,000 people relocating there in 2025. Other major destinations include Bekasi, Depok, and Tangerang. Drivers for this migration include high living costs, expensive property, limited job opportunities, and environmental concerns such as pollution and flooding in the capital.
