Jakarta food prices surge ahead of Idul Adha amid weather setbacks and higher demand
Jakarta's food prices rose sharply in the weeks before Idul Adha 1447 Hijriah, officials said the increase was driven by a mix of heightened consumer demand for the holiday and adverse weather conditions that reduced horticultural output. Heavy rainfall and outbreaks of plant‑pest organisms lowered yields of key vegetables such as chilies, red onions and garlic.
The DKI Jakarta government, through its Food, Marine and Agriculture Agency, responded by intensifying price monitoring via market visits and the Jakarta Food Price Information (IPJ) app, coordinating with producers, distributors and state‑owned enterprises like Perumda Dharma Jaya, and preparing market interventions. Measures include subsidised food distribution, low‑price markets for low‑income households, and securing a stock of sacrificial cattle to keep livestock prices stable. Specific price spikes reported were a 12.12% rise in red bird’s‑eye chilies (from Rp 71,664 to Rp 80,354 per kg) and increases of 5.61% to 3.96% in other chilies and red onions.
