Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences Holds 12th Plenary in Jakarta

The Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) convened its 12th Plenary Assembly in Jakarta from 20 to 26 July 2026. About 120 cardinals, bishops and other delegates representing 22 episcopal conferences across Asia gathered at the Mulia Hotel and related venues.

The assembly featured a video message from Pope Leo XIV urging Eucharistic spirituality and church unity. Cardinal Mario Grech and FABC president Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão highlighted the synodal journey, inter‑religious dialogue and social justice as core themes. Delegates toured the Istiqlal‑Cathedral “Tunnel of Friendship,” symbolising Indonesia’s interfaith harmony.

In addition, the bishops approved revised governing statutes for the federation, updating the structure to a smaller executive board and expanding the central secretariat’s role. Security for the event was managed by a human‑centric team led by Brig‑Gen P. Gunung Sarasmoro, emphasizing a visible yet unobtrusive presence.

Overall, the plenary underscored regional cooperation, the promotion of dialogue between faiths, and the Catholic Church’s commitment to a synodal, collaborative model across Asia.
