Jakarta mandates garage ownership for vehicle purchases

Under Article 140 of DKI Jakarta Provincial Regulation Number 5 of 2014, all motor vehicle owners, including individuals and businesses, are required to own or control a garage for vehicle storage.

This regulation prohibits storing vehicles in public road spaces to prevent traffic congestion and narrowing of road lanes. To comply, prospective buyers must provide proof of garage ownership via a certificate from their local sub-district (kelurahan), which serves as a mandatory requirement for the issuance of a vehicle registration certificate (STNK).

For residents without private land, the regulation allows for the rental of designated storage spaces, provided that official proof of garage control can be presented.
