Jakarta officials urge economic growth to drive equitable welfare

Jakarta officials and regional legislators are emphasizing the need to translate economic growth into improved quality of life and equitable welfare for all citizens. Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin noted that Jakarta's 5.52 percent economic growth in the second quarter of 2026 demonstrates resilience against global economic challenges. He stressed that development must prioritize access to education, healthcare, and basic services to ensure benefits reach all residents.

Simultaneously, Suhud Alynudin, Chairman of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), called for more effective use of the regional budget to address poverty and inequality. He pointed out that despite large budgets, millions still rely on the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), indicating persistent poverty. As Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary in 2027, Suhud urged the provincial government to focus on the Human Development Index, economic welfare, and pollution rather than short-term political interests.

To address these goals, the DPRD is currently finalizing its 2027 work plan. The legislative body aims to optimize programs that involve direct community interaction, including recess activities, regional regulation oversight, and socializations to ensure development impacts public welfare.
