Jakarta plans Transjakarta Laut to connect Thousand Islands
The Jakarta Provincial Government, in collaboration with the Jakarta Transportation Agency and PT Transportasi Jakarta, is developing the 'Transjakarta Laut' sea transport service. This initiative aims to integrate transportation to the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu), improving inter-island connectivity and supporting daily mobility.
Local political factions, including the Democrat and Perindo parties, have expressed support for the project, noting its potential to end isolation for island residents and stimulate economic growth. To ensure local benefits, officials have proposed four pillars: inclusive partnerships with local traditional boat operators through 'buy the service' schemes, assistance with vessel certification and safety, priority employment for local residents, and integration of payment systems via JakLingko.
The development is also expected to bolster the tourism sector and strengthen micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by increasing visitor activity and local product demand.
